Guided imagery is where suggestions guide a client within hypnosis to imagine a calm, relaxed place(for general relaxation) or to rehearse a stressful situation in a calm relaxed way such as taking an exam or going to the dentist. Our brain has ‘neural plasticity’ which means that new ways of thinking and behaving are possible by creating new neural pathways. These pathways are established when we either establish a new habit physically or mentally. This means that whether a person is merely imagining they are doing something or actually physically doing it, the same activity occurs in the brain. By repeating this activity mentally within hypnosis new neural pathways are created within our brains which encourage new helpful behaviors which feel familiar. So rehearsal within hypnosis can be a valuable tool to achieve a better outcome either prior to an important event or in establishing a new habit.
